Coding. It kills me.

Since I am clearly insane, I decided to code [livejournal.com profile] white_jenna's layout on a new style system. *BEAMS THE CRAZY BEAM OF THE DERANGED* Four hours later and I'm a little cross eyed, maybe 60% successful, but have enough of my head into Minimalism now to kind-of-sort-of know what I'm doing wrong. Kinda.

Tea break now, finishing touches later. *collapses*

[edit] Done! *collapses* If anyone wants to test-run it for me, clickity here! And if anyone wants some CSS tutorials on Minimalism, god, I could probably write you an essay right now.

Oooh, shiny.

Is Livejournal CSS different from regular websites? Because I don't dare to update my journal in fear of screwing up beyond repair. (LJ won't let me keep this layout after all, it disappeared after the updates, and it's only still there because I refuse to update.)

[identity profile] karanguni.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 12:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, I'm so sorry that I didn't reply on MSN when you pinged me - I was off at dinner!

CSS is standard anywhere you go, just that LJ has a whole bunch of different journal styles, each with their own ways of being customised via CSS. \o\ Mostly people who design figure it out themselves or via other designers' documentation, but Minimalism is a pretty new layout, so there's not much out there to learn from. It's pretty all right!

I'm impressed because minamalism keeps kicking me over and over and over again! My own attempts at css have made the side bar the width I wanted and screwed up everything else. Argh... goes back to staring at code.

[identity profile] karanguni.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 01:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Need help with anything? I saw your post on [livejournal.com profile] s2minimalism, but I was kinda busy, and I don't know if you've overcome that yet. :D

[identity profile] bessemerprocess.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm basically still having the same problem. I figured out how to move the text block down, but so far, that's all I've figured out.

[identity profile] karanguni.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Try:

.sidebar-inner { width: 215px; }

And delete the rest of the css you've got in there for now? It may self-correct.

[identity profile] bessemerprocess.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
It makes the text in the side bar narrower, but it doesn't actually make the side bar narrower. Hmmm.

[identity profile] karanguni.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 01:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, okay, righto:

 .sidebar, .sidebar-inner {

width: 215px; }

[identity profile] karanguni.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
You could try adding:

.u-wrap {

display: block; }

in addition to the above if it doesn't work!

[identity profile] bessemerprocess.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, even with both of those it only changes the text. This is what I had in there before:

/* Preferred width in pixels of your sidebar */
.sidebar, .sidebar-inner { width: 215px; }

/* Preferred width in pixels from the left edge of the page to where you want your main content to begin (probably a bit wider than your sidebar to give some space) */
.column-left .header, .column-left .content-inner { margin-left: 215px; }

/* Preferred width in pixels from the left edge of the main content to where you want your entries to begin (again, a small amount to give some space.) */
/* 15px will line the entries up with the header text. */
.entry-wrap { margin-left: 15px; }

.content-inner { margin-bottom:-1px; background: #ffffff; }

[identity profile] karanguni.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yosh, okay, I think I know why this is happening now. Your userpic is being set to "float" - so you've got to pin it back down and force it to stay in line:

.header H3 {

display: block; }

.u-wrap {

float: none !important; }

[identity profile] bessemerprocess.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, if I add that to my old css, it's pretty close, though the icon still looks odd.

[identity profile] karanguni.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, the designer of the layout may have just placed the icon above the headers, so in this case THE SANEST SOLUTION MAY JUST BE TO POSITION IT NICELY ABOVE THE HEADERS:

.u-wrap {

float: none !important;
position: relative;
left: -80px; }

I'm just estimating here, but it should move the icon to the left just enough to line up with everything else.

[identity profile] bessemerprocess.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
\o/ YAY!!! does a little dance. That completely fixed the icon problem! Thank you so much!

Have any idea of how to get the rounded white corner to line up with the text block again?

[identity profile] karanguni.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing about minimalism is that each different base stylesheet is styled differently; I wasn't using the one you are, so I'm sorry that I'm a bit slow!

To change the main white content blob thing, I'm thinking that you need to adjust how far from the left your MAIN white blob is -- the CSS you used only defined how far away the sidebar was, ergo the muckup...

.column-right .content-inner {
margin-right:245px;
margin-left:30px;
}

IF that moves the white blob back (it may not fit perfectly yet), then we're on the right path...

[identity profile] bessemerprocess.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't worry about being slow, that fact you have any idea at all how to fix it, is excellent! [livejournal.com profile] sarken and I spent like three hours yesterday trying to figure it out before collectively pounding our heads on tables.

Added the css, but it doesn't look like it changed anything.

[identity profile] karanguni.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm, I'm looking but I'm not finding the root cause. Gimme a few more.

[identity profile] bessemerprocess.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
No problem, take as long as you'd like.

[identity profile] karanguni.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
safjal My brain is way too fried tonight to figure out the CSS for this thing - I swear to god that the guy who designed it was a nutcase who just liked to make things as bloody complicated and badly named as possible - so I have no idea right now how to make the rounded tab reach out to your white space. If you want your white space to head back in to meet the rounded tab, sure, but I'm guessing that you reduced the sidebar for a reason. xD

♥ I'll try again tomorrow when I'm less sleepy!

[identity profile] bessemerprocess.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously, thank you for trying at all! I agree, it's the craziest making css I've run into in a long time! Thank you!

[identity profile] karanguni.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no kidding - Minimalism has 2 base style sheet, SIX different sub-base sheets and FIVE different, individual stylesheets per sub-base, fjsklzjfla I know people want to milk layout codes and customise but this is RIDICULOUS.

[identity profile] white-jenna.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh, I really like it. Will pass it on to the other mod and let you know. Thanks so much. :D

[identity profile] sphinxofthenile.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoa, that looks amazing! <3

[identity profile] karanguni.livejournal.com 2009-03-09 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
♥ I was so superslow, I'm glad you guys didn't kill me! :D Glad you like it!

[identity profile] karanguni.livejournal.com 2009-03-09 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
♥ ♥ THANK YOU!

[identity profile] sphinxofthenile.livejournal.com 2009-03-09 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Umm, actually, would you kill me if I asked how did you make the comment section look so shiny?

[identity profile] karanguni.livejournal.com 2009-03-10 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
I can do up a tutorial tonight!

[identity profile] sphinxofthenile.livejournal.com 2009-03-11 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that would be wonderful! :)
