Maturin in the books... Maturin in the books has more time to grow, more time to be, more time to Be A Spy, to Be An Odd Husband, to be a Doctor, to be a Friend, to be conflicted. Maturin as Bettany plays him is, in my mind, as close to a perfect depiction of a character in a limited space as I could ever imagine - Jack, too, though oddly Russell makes Jack smarter in some ways than Jack is in the books. xD WHATEVER THE CASE, I think that if Paul Bettany could be chained to a ship and made to act out the entire series, I'd die happy. \o\
Slashes are indeterminate; everything's indeterminate! I'm still reeling from my last piece of Life, and all the oddities that come with growing up and friends who are also growing up, albeit with more viciousness and strangeness.
It's been so long since I've seen the film I can't really comment on the details on his characterisation (I barely remember the plot). Funnily enough, what I do remember thinking is that Jack and Stephen's relationship? Homoerotic to the max.

I didn't read them recently - I went through a huge phase after the movie came out, around what - 2003? ish? - and devoured about ten of them, off second-hand bookshelves, in the space of three weeks or less. Speed reading comes from skimming LJ posts and reading POB!
