The only “positive” is that the chaos is a bunch of uneducated, barely literate yahoos who don’t know what to do except say “that’s some fancy furniture” and then smoke some weed while taking selfies and tucking small “souvenirs” into their backpacks.
50-50 likelihood the US will have two weeks of president pence such that a proper transfer of power will occur.
Had this same event actually occurred under a semi-respected Republican (by gov lifers- the ppl with 9-5 day jobs in halls of power) who lost to an untested “outsider” dem pres elect I would be concerned but, in this noxious case, the pentagon hates trump and without their support, this clown show is just what it is- illiterate clowns proving to the US and to the world how uneducated, gullible, and racist a notable percentage of the population is.
The only question I have is who is gonna show up to collect their trash.
Ah. Yeah... My ipad won’t let me cut-n-paste a link from the newyork times but, front page, right column, this op-ed by Warzel:
“America Is in a Reality Crisis” For years, professional grifters, trolls, true believers and political opportunists have sowed conspiratorial lies. We are now witnessing the reaping.
The fact that they can just "WALTZ INTO" a government building? Yeah talk about security problems. Didn't a whole bunch of someones have to let them in?
That’s the moment I put a 50% chance that his (p)residency is going to end two weeks early.
Normally I have zero hope for america because I have seen too much ignorance and miseducation amongst “respectable” people with posh houses and nice degrees from nice unis but with all of this caught on video and in photos, all of it so blatant, and news reporters FINALLY saying words like “attempted coup” and “(white) terrorists” and FINALLY saying phrases like “had this been BLM imagine how differently and forcefully it would have be handled” I am starting to see those cracks that let the line shine through.
Sure, america just might go back to sleep on the 20th and sure, they just might turn a blind eye but the evidence is there for all of the nation and all of the world to see plain as daylight. To not address this will be the true bad optics.
Ppl in my (former) professional circles have been warning about this for years, even decades. It cannot be ignored now. The evidence is too plain and too clear.
My only fear is how much people who have been saying that evidence is irrefutable, too clear, and too recorded have been proven wrong by the sheer capability of America to shoot progressives first and say I love you to conservative radicals, but on the other hand I don't get to vote and can only sit back and watch. Fingers triply crossed.
I hear you and I have two passports so I always have the option to get back in an airplane.
I will be the first to admit that I understand the heart of america no better (but also no worse) than an anthropologist. Since 2015 I’ve seen some interesting things from inside the heart of the well-heeled beast — the white families of doctors and lawyers who hire others to politely do their dirty work shoot progressives first while sitting in church and pretending that the festering far right is nothing to be concerned about. ... and, wait, let me figure out how to log into discord (does my old password still work) after I make another cup of coffee and boot up my laptop.
I'm part of the millennial well-educated crowd, and we're all feeling a combination of guilt/outrage/outrage that we feel surprised at our outrage-complacency/revolving door of millennial feelings, and we're growing up into a combination of calcification and desire not to calcify due to that how tf do you cross the border and understand the heart of America/do anything other than vote on your wallet and some political stances thing. That said, I'm not an American citizen and will never, ever give up my passport because of this shit.
Yes, emphatically, never burden yourself with a “suck in america” legal situation. Do not. Just don’t. If you can retain your other passport or some equiv legal status in order to vote in america (or vote from abroad in american elections), consider the option, otherwise think twice before ever ever ever ever burdening yourself with american-only status. (My long term back-of-napkin prognosis for the US is middling, at best).
Re everything else you said. While the details are not appropriate for a (public) DW post, I spent 5 years in a 9-5 in which:
A. I took one for the team learning what I learned (and it almost destroyed my mental health but I’m okay and probably stronger b/c of it). B. I learned far more about the heart of american complacency than I ever wanted to know and, hooooboy...

Talk about bad visuals and a symbolic culmination of a symbolic shitshow.

It's symbolic in the metaphysical sense of having a meaning that is not necessarily correlated to the reality it's meant to represent...

I want to see how far the fields of America burn down and what the ashes will serve as fertiliser for. :/

Compare to BLM, and sigh. Then look at the statement saying "I love you," and then... sigh.
