Random blabberthought

As I finish up some work with economics (oh god, that took me two days, this is evil) and fight my way through literature, a couple of fandom things, just for personal metamumbling.

I'm pretty sure I grew up wanting to be one of the good guys. I'm pretty sure I still do - except the Power Rangers and stuff don't really hold muhc interest for me anymore. It's like, you pick up a few good books, and suddenly your view on the world and ethicality is warped into some sort of personal justice kinda thing. Maybe it's because it's too hard to be Superman, but seriously -

I take a look at all the fictional characters that I look up to, or try to wrap my head around, or admire: there's Tseng, who breaks bones and kills, but who also goes through enough ethical moral shifts in the course of his lifetime to make you wonder how relative relativity can go, and how permanent anything can ever be - or should be. Then there's Lucifer (DC), who is the inverse of that: pride and the fall and an eternity of singular amorality - but a commitment to promises that really only gets paralleled by, well, Batman. Oh yeah, Batman. Crazy rich loner, who destroys every personal relationship he touches, but who has more integrity and maybe real love than anyone I can really think of right now. Sam Vimes, who's got cynicism like an acid bath, and yet more faith than half of Ankh-Morpork thrown together. Lex, who's evil, but not really, and who could've been so good, but didn't get the chance - or made his own way, almost as odd as it is fitting. Have we mentioned Brian Kinney, yet? Promiscuous son of a bitch who's more mentally!monogamous than the most monogamous monogamitic monogamier?

They're not all very good people. I don't think the media likes many of them at all. I don't think it's what parents might have in mind for their children. But it's like growing up in a safe and peaceful place here at home, with all the paddings of a pretty damn fortunate life, and at the end of the day I learn more from the people who everyone loves to hate about the really important stuff.

Then I doubletake and think, well, uh, I like the Flash, too, and I really loved Aragorn, and then there was Togusa, and really, Saito, and Charles Wallace and all the other really good guys who fought really hard to be really good.

Mostly, I think I want more Ben and Jerry's now.

THAT WAS YOUR FIFTEEN MINUTE WAFFLE, BITCH; BACK TO WORK.
