Yuletide. What would Yule be without it. Also, Recs I
The people
It was my second time participating, and my god I was a young and silly fool to have missed out on yulechat last year. Because this year's
yuletide experience was characterised by late-night/early-morning flailings and made possible only by the insane generosity and madness that is the #yuletide channel. Coming off the plane three days before stories were due, I didn't think I'd make my pinch-hit, much less come out with eight stories and a boatload of awesome new friends. ♥ to everyone: sara(aah), whetherwoman, mjules, deejay, kristin, Snow, deepa, hh, Jaded, voksen, Lferion, Llwyden, yf, moontyger, Grey Bard, Livia, kankeigo, Franzi, Piru, Truth, MsMcK, Now I Am Running Out Of Space and Memory For Names Here. You guys (whether named or tragically unnamed by my failure to recall) are the bestest thing since the thing before and the thing after sliced bread. ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ You guys are the bringers of comfort and joy.
The fic!
I do not know what amazing small god I pleased, for serious. I came in expecting nothing, and came out with four amazing, amazing fics in fandoms that I feel have been sorely lacking love. Here, let me rec them to you with great reccage:
Lucifer (comics)
Mike Carey's work is full of genius - it's one of those series that breed potential like hamsters. Three of my fics came from here, and oh man, every one of them did this series justice. And every one of them covered a different aspect of Lucifer, so it is like lots of tasty jam spread over very grateful bread.
Taciturnitas
I love the title. Not just because it is a shiny Latin thing, but because it evokes everything about Duma that can be said, and opens up the fic to a great, great character piece on the Angel of Silence. Put your hands up if you have at least wondered why Duma doesn't speak, or why Lucifer respects him as much as he does. This fic? Will answer your questions in a way that is quiet and poignant and painful. Lucifer here is younger than he is in the main series, I think, and the author's way of treating a Lucifer still capable of hurt and still capable of open questioning breaks my heart.
Crux
Put your hands in the air for Christopher Rudd, new Lord of Hell and inheritor of a lot of Lucifer's bullshit. How does the boy deal? THIS FIC WILL TELL YOU. Rudd's pretty composed in the comics, insofar as an ex-human guy who rises up through the ranks via very complicated social squiggling can be composed. Lucifer pays a visit to him in this fic, and opens Rudd's eyes up to some of the realities for which I originally loved Lucifer. The knowledge that humans do unto humans more than the devil ever could -- Lucifer teaches the hardest lessons, and Rudd is a man who needs to learn them.
Even the Angels
A Treatfic that is FULL OF MICHAEL. Michael and Lucifer - their dynamic? I fangirl it. And here? It is played out. Brotherhood! Apples! Michael's magnanimity, and Lucifer's selfishness, and oh god, regret. Please read this. Read it now.
Murder Mysteries
Even in Darkness
Murder Mysteries was powerful both in the short story and the comic format - not in the least because Raguel has such a powerful narrator's voice. Taken in conjunction with a healthy dose of Lucifer or Sandman, Raguel makes for one seriously tragic angel. This fic? Took all the tragedy of the Biblical Fall and Raguel's own and rolled it up into one tight and painful piece. All the questions you're not supposed to ask in the Silver City, all the aspects of new creation that don't allow for blurred lines, all the sound anf fury of premeditation: don't question the ineffable. Just read this fic.
And now for some quickrecs before lunch:
Boston Legal
Fanfare, Fan Fiction, and the Fourth Wall
This will probably be recced a thousand times, but it is worth reccing a thousand and one times, too. Alan defends a slash fanfic writer. Denny, too. The fourth wall breaks, and we stampede inwards with great joy. I will let the fic do its own talking, because I think Denny speaks through it, for serious:
At that moment, Shirley Schmidt happened to walk by the office. She opened her mouth to scold Alan, obviously perturbed by the young woman hugging him, but Denny cut her off. "Don't worry, Shirley," he said. "She's not straight. She's a slasher. That means she wants two men, not just one."
NO WORDS. Just - don't drink anything while reading.
The Graveyard Book
Not Monster Nor Stranger
Silas. Who doesn't want to know more about Silas, and how he works, how he thinks, how he acts when he's not in position as Bod's guardian or part of the Guard? This fic evokes the same sense of sympathy for sir vampire as I think was felt at his depature at the end of the book. Very, very good stuff.
History Boys
now for a breath I tarry
A fic about Scripps, at Oxford, that does so much justice to his character. The ensemble cast is here as well, and everyone seems to be learning something, and growing up. And that's as it should be - Dakin and Posner feature especially, but there's a moment in here from Rudge that just makes me smile, and smile, and smile. Quiet, but strong, and more than just a little beautiful.
Junjou Romantica
Junjou Christmas
Ensemble feel-good hilarity; the Junjou cast does Christmas. Kamijou can't walk, Akihiko is an asshole of magnificient proportions, Migayi tries not to think too much, Shinobu + cabbages, Nowaki is a fiend, and Misaki. Well. *g* Read it and find out.
Wild Adapter
The Here and The Now
I'm sure I'm not the first person who's wondered how Tokito would've dealt with Komiya's level of engagement with Kubota, considering how Kubota is around most other human beings. This fic does a splendid job bringing Komiya back into the foreground for a little while and letting his spectre speak in silence.
