Yuletide 2015: Recs #1

HO HO HO MERRY CHRISTMAS, IT'S THAT TIME OF THE YEAR.

I got the very wonderful Ivan, By, and Illyan which, in case the title isn't indicative, is a Vorkosigan fic that delves quite happily into the little ImpSec-y warrenholes that connect those three. Go have a gander!

In other recs:

The Martian - We Could All Use A Little Change

Okay, there's going to be a weird amount of a/b/o in this recs list, but bear with me in this first one, because this is not the a/b/o you thought you were going to read. This is a/b/o FOR SCIENCE, this is a/b/o in the solitary vacuum (sort of) of space, this is Mark Watney TALKING TO HIMSELF through heat suppressants and itching and a serious aversion to potatoes. This is on-point, in-character, out-of-your-world voice greatness, and even if you know NOTHING ABOUT THE MARTIAN, take a dive into this one for some seriously awesome genre-savvy hilarigood times. A+ CANNOT RECOMMEND MORE.

Vorkosigan Saga - Vorkosigan's Viper

No seriously. I don't normally like a/b/o. But here we have an initially cracky Ges Vorrutyer who starts off as Aral Vorkosigan's omega and ends up cutting people down in fine canon form. Wonder what might've happened if Ges ever took a walk on the slightly less politically fucked up side? Then give this one some of your day, because it straddles the wonderfully uncanny valley of what-if and dumps into "why not?" AU land, and yes yes yes. Some of the best Ges and Aral, I think.

Kaze Tachinu (The Wind Rises) - i give myself up to this shining place

This is such a hard damned fandom to write for, not just because of the mishmash of historicity, literary everything, and magical realism, but because to get the Ghibli pastiche down right in Miyazaki's final work is just staggeringly intimidating. This fic stands up to all of that, gives Naoko a wonderful dreamscape of her own, and is just a great tone-poem of a tribute.

You aren't alone! I usually have piles of fic guiltily bookmarked in the hopes of commenting... 15 months later... but I'm nearly unburdened, already. (That Culture fic pair aside-- I knew that was you about a scene and a half in, and felt far from ambivalent about it!)

Man, Imperial Radch, all that tempting fic. One book down: liked it; but then the air just sort of fell out of my sails.
