Late to the party, once more. These days I don't even know where the party is, or who was invited, or if the party even exists...

'How do you not know anything about the Leafs?' Eric blinks, shocked straight back into justified incredulity. 'You live in Toronto! You're actually Canadian!'

Both were way too much fun to write, and both would have been way longer if I hadn't had the planning capabilities of a dumb slug and the immune system of a weak child.

He wrote Giana, perhaps to spite his father or to mollify himself. Letters about the emptiness of space and other claptrap; when he could bring himself to, he also included a spare drawing or too. Most of it was of military ordinance, because I'm in want of better subjects.

Ges wrote him, like a self-refreshing wound; chipper stories about his Academy days, and then darker ones about the alphas his father was shopping him to and the way they smelled, each scent dissected into notes as though Ges were decanting fine wines.

Sorry, Q.

'It's a DB 10,' Q agreed, going absent-minded again the way he did, Zakalwe noticed, when the work was more interesting than the people. 'Besides all of the regulars, it's got rockets and a flamethrower and a boot full of caltrops. Speaking,' Q looked up, 'in layman's terms, obviously.'

Meanwhile, in Illyan land...

Orbit (2514 words) by karanguni
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Vorkosigan Saga - Lois McMaster Bujold
Rating: General Audiences

Characters: Aral Vorkosigan, Simon Illyan, Cordelia Naismith Vorkosigan

Cordelia put one finger on the far edge of his plate and nudged it closer towards him. 'For all love, Simon,' she said, with accusingly gentle tones. 'Is ImpSec so poorly paid that we could ransom your honour with one warm meal?'

All in all, I wanted to write 5 things, and I wanted to write at least 15K, and I managed both! Somehow! Magically. With a lot of stress, because work sort of blew up and then I was exhausted on those plane flights home and then got rolled over by a well-timed and ill-met visit by some wandering norovirus.

I'm really sort of eyebrow-fuzzling at myself about what I want to do for yuletide 2016 - this year was kind of meh for me on the reading front, but it's also the only fandom activity I do anymore, and I really A+ enjoy the writing. On the other hand, I think it's going to push me to pick up a few more canons that I've had on the backburner, so... \o/?

If anyone has any canons they'd like to throw my way, I'd super appreciate any pimping of any kind.

Now to try and wrangle some energy up for fandom_stocking...
karanguni: (Default)

I got the very wonderful Ivan, By, and Illyan which, in case the title isn't indicative, is a Vorkosigan fic that delves quite happily into the little ImpSec-y warrenholes that connect those three. Go have a gander!

In other recs:

The Martian - We Could All Use A Little Change

Okay, there's going to be a weird amount of a/b/o in this recs list, but bear with me in this first one, because this is not the a/b/o you thought you were going to read. This is a/b/o FOR SCIENCE, this is a/b/o in the solitary vacuum (sort of) of space, this is Mark Watney TALKING TO HIMSELF through heat suppressants and itching and a serious aversion to potatoes. This is on-point, in-character, out-of-your-world voice greatness, and even if you know NOTHING ABOUT THE MARTIAN, take a dive into this one for some seriously awesome genre-savvy hilarigood times. A+ CANNOT RECOMMEND MORE.

Vorkosigan Saga - Vorkosigan's Viper

No seriously. I don't normally like a/b/o. But here we have an initially cracky Ges Vorrutyer who starts off as Aral Vorkosigan's omega and ends up cutting people down in fine canon form. Wonder what might've happened if Ges ever took a walk on the slightly less politically fucked up side? Then give this one some of your day, because it straddles the wonderfully uncanny valley of what-if and dumps into "why not?" AU land, and yes yes yes. Some of the best Ges and Aral, I think.

Kaze Tachinu (The Wind Rises) - i give myself up to this shining place

This is such a hard damned fandom to write for, not just because of the mishmash of historicity, literary everything, and magical realism, but because to get the Ghibli pastiche down right in Miyazaki's final work is just staggeringly intimidating. This fic stands up to all of that, gives Naoko a wonderful dreamscape of her own, and is just a great tone-poem of a tribute.

Vorkosigan Saga

The Hollow Men. – My lovely gift! A wonderful introspective Simon fic, in which Simon reflects upon the chip, himself, and even bumps into an early Aral. Wonderful, wonderful.

The Use of Negative Space – early Aral, and Ges, and oh.

Re-windJeremy Clockson. Lobsang. Time! Clocks! Footnotes! What more could you ask for?

Justice League

But Nobody's Counting – Wally, doing things for others, being competent and warm and wonderful. Also with a generous side-helping of magnificently in-character Bats.

Xi You Ji/Journey to the West

A Peaceful Journey – perfect Monkey, perfect Dragon, perfect tone.

Thank you, Yuletide Writer! :D At the end of the day, as long as you have fun with what you're writing, I'll be happy to receive anything that you write me.

AND PANICKING ABOUT YULETIDE AJLFJLKASFJLKASFjl. Guess which genius left her base fandom text IN ANOTHER COUNTRY? K's intelligence rivals that of small centipedes. \o

Christmas cards should be going out - I'm not sure when the US/UK ones will get there, guys, since I'm sending those by proxy and the proxy people have had some Seriously Bad Luck (TM). If you're in Aussieland or local-wise, you should be getting yours around or just after the Season! ♥

SO HOW IS EVERYONE. You are obliged to fill me back in!
karanguni: (YULETIDE snowflake -)
I may be the only person intelligent enough to realise that I should've posted to say that I'd be realli realli busy before I was realli realli busy and not, say, after. Anyway, am chilling out in cold country; all of fandomy stuff is on sorta-hold (save Yuletide, which is on sorta-panic) until I get homebound. :D :D :D :D Mostly I fear the wrath backlog of [livejournal.com profile] rahmbamarama.

Now I go off to write you guys Christmas cards.
karanguni: (YULETIDE snowflake -)
Have you signed up for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide yet? Because it is my job to inform you that if you do not sign up, you're going to sign up now. :D :D :D :D :D Here, have a convenient direct link to the website!

So exciting so exciting so exciting.

Also, got massacred by philosophy paper. Hooray! Time to weep in a corner and do maths.

OCTOBER IS COMING. That means [livejournal.com profile] yuletide. \o/

So, multiple-time Yuletiders on the flist: ARE YOU EXCITED. I am excited. I am so excited that I don't even care that the official admin call for prompts hasn't gone out yet. Yuletide is fandoms' feel-good happytimes. God. I want to write my recipient a huge-ass fic this year, and I don't even really know how much/what I'll be really offering. *twitches*

Anyone who hasn't done Yuletide before? Do it this year, oh please, please do. Because it will make you happy. Trillions of happy.

Meanwhile, a song by Harvey Danger: Happiness Writes White. To anyone who's ever kept a crazy schedule or for anyone who's happy or been in love - is a good song. Has awesome happy piano noises. *approves*

Alsowik: Tori Amos - Happiness is a Warm Gun. Give this one a chance; the synth keyboard and her vocals and the lyrics are ready to slay if you don't mind the experimental nature and (anti-)gun message. Mother superior jumped the gun, oh, mother superior jumped the gun. I need a fix / I need, oh I need / Mother superior jumped the g-g-gun.

Yuletide has made me want and sort of need to get SG1 seasons 9 and 10. And also, to be late for school and stuff. *RUNS AROUND*

A universe of unmapped grief and love
And new master light is beyond
The pleiades and plow and southern stars.

O soaring
Icarus of outworld, burn bright
The traceries of known skymarks,
Slide the highway planets behind
Your clear waxed wings.

Go conquer the everywhere left
Beyond your sad confinement
In a predicted bonehouse,
Witch thrown riddle of flesh
And water.

O soar until nothing
remains but great glittering holes
In the black godspun shirt over your head.
