survived hell week

battling accountants over taxes. really need to change accountants.

something something kitty

hi guys

[edit] OKAY so I will try for something more coherent and respond-to-able. I mean, we try to journal at ourselves, but we also try to be on DW to talk to each other, eh? Talk about cross-purposes...

1. reading

I've been v. happy with my overpriced cuddle-buddy, the Kindle Oasis, and happily beta-read some stuff for [personal profile] yhlee that has given me a lot of FEELINGS. Not just over the books themselves (highly recommend, guys), but also in this sort of writer-in-writerspace EFFERVESCENCE AND COMPANIONSHIP feeling that gives me this weird SHOUNEN ANIME BURNING sense that I haven't had since I was co-writing with people in fandom, oh, a decade ago. Almost literally at this point! Which brings me back to wanting to do that more, and also to being galvanised a little to get off my ass and hopefully get something original out and published in the next year or two. If I have any of that skill at all /o\

2. ON THAT NOTE: FLIST CHALLENGE - worldbuild in the comments!

I remember dropping this earlier on in a post with someone this year, but I think it'd be fun to just drum up some fun thought-slash-writing fooling-around in the comments of post. Just to riff. I love riffing. So, this post, regardless if it's your own original stuff or fandom or just random speculation: tell me about currency.

Seriously, tho'. I was thinking about this the other night for one of my RP scenarios. Not saying this is has to be what you comment about, but how would you, say... transition a freshly post-colonial state (or one that's seceded, whatever your choice of statehood) from its (presumably healthy) parent currency to a brand new one?

CHAOS? MADNESS? BANANA MONEY? MAGICAL RESERVES OF GOLD? There are a lot of answers from history, but I'm interested to see what y'all think - without researching Wikipedia (unless you want to do that).

3. random incompetency

re: my accountants. Literally I told them, SPLIT THE MORTGAGE. They're tax filers. They had one job. They didn't do that. It makes me so freaking mad.

4. random competency

In spite of being a tiny bb at work, I have somehow magically ascended (?) to that point where random people who I only tangentially know are emailing me directly about questions that I really have no business answering.

IS IT BETTER, people of the professional world, to hide thy competency and silently progress, or to broadcast it and be laden with the masses' bullshit? ai.

5. type-code-switching

I swear to god everyone at work types in lowercase sometimes, with rare exception. So I've taken to it, a little: partially because I've also entered at varying points in the last month the FUCKS NOT GIVEN stage and wanted to vent that in my typing style. But it's strange to me to see it happening here in a post. Ha! I'm a chronic code-switcher in real life; guess that shouldn't _totally_ surprise me.

Look, I'm even doing it with italics versus _emphasis_.

Day 04: Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them.

/goes to friending meme

karanguni: (JUDGE)
So I'm trying hard to make each of these [community profile] snowflake_challenge posts a little bit useful or broadly interesting. Resolutions are a pretty hard one! I've found, ironically, that the major times I've been able to keep up new habits are under extreme duress (schedule is too full, running on empty, head on fire, heart in pieces) or extreme boredom. Funny how that works.

Fandom-wise, pretty much the only time I've been successful at writing at the last couple of years has been with challenges. [community profile] yuletide and [profile] notprimetime aside, anyone have favourites they want to share?

Day 03: In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private. )
karanguni: everyone loves a rich boy (cilian MURPHY)
Another day of [community profile] snowflake_challenge. As part of it, I'm going to do my damnedest to comment on everyone's entries who are on my reading list. If you've dropped in recently and want to expand your circle, drop me a subscribe and I'll do the same.

Under cut: Le Guin's Left Hand.

Day 2: In your own space, share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life. )

On a separate note, I'm going to ping off of [personal profile] yhlee's Pay It Forward meme:

Let's start 2017 off in a positive way with a Pay It Forward meme. The first 6 people to comment (and more if I can manage it) will receive a surprise from me at some point in 2017 - anything from a book, a ticket, something home-grown or made, a postcard, absolutely any surprise! It will happen when the mood comes over me and I find something that I believe would suit you and make you happy.

(If you don't like surprises and would rather have something off a wishlist and/or some warning, let me know in your comment. The goal is to make you happy.)

If you can, post this in your own journal and pay it forward. Let's do more kind and loving things for each other in 2017, without any reason other than to make each other smile and show that we think of each other.

I would be more than happy to buy The Left Hand of Darkness (or one of Le Guin's short story collections featuring the Hainish Cycle; it's not that I don't like Earthsea - I've just never read it) - physical or digital - for someone as part of it.
karanguni: (Default)
Day 8: Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them.

Done and done, and hello to anyone new! My space is your space &c. *g* If you want to ramble about anything at all, the comments are always open. (Tumblr folks, say hi if you haven't before!)

I'm also eternally taking prompts for any fandoms I know, and any fandoms I don't know that someone's willing to shill to me... :D
karanguni: because those are some happy drugs (WATA you on boy?)
While I scribble endlessly at Endless Fic, allow me to distract you with that which has distracted me.

Layer Cake, 1:40 of Craig/Gambon drug-dealer con-man awesomeness with a side-serving of Tom Hardy as a double-firsts Cambridge cocaine cutter. WHY ARE YOU EVEN STILL READING THIS?

Narratively and thematically it's an in-between the Coen Brothers and Snatch. Surprise, surprise! Because Snatch was produced by Director Matthew Vaughn, also of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels fame and - sort of/not really weirdly - Stardust. He's the reason why half this movie looks like amazing still photography.

I could make comments about how much I love the OST (STARSAILOR) asjklfjal and go on about dialects of English and how they make my head spin around in happy circles, but then I COULD PICSPAM LIKE THE SHALLOW, SHALLOW PERSON I AM RIGHT NOW:

You really really really really want to click this link. )

Please go watch this film as I expire on the cutting room floor of its goodness.
karanguni: (BALTHIER beckons)
1. K has started work
2. Work is kicking K's ass
3. (Passive voice) K's ass is getting kicked by work.

In other words: in spite of my humongously huge writing to-do list of humungous, the fates have made it such that I am mostly too braindead by the end of the day to finish a fic in a single sitting, which is how most of the insanity is usually produced.

I do, however, want to get all that stuff done! And tasty ideas, they do exist! So I am writing them in piecemeal and in parts, and everything is getting put on the beta filter. If you don't mind watching fic come together in drabbly bits, or just want something to read more often than once in never once in while, COMMENT and I will add you!

Alsowik: if you can see the Trekfic post beneath this one, you're already on the filter.

'Course, if you want to be removed at any time, just let me know!

karanguni: (BALTHIER beckons)
The Jardine Matheson Corporation - to summarise: Hong Kong, the early-to-mid 1800s. Shipping company! Smuggling opium into China for Great Profit! Being otherwise a very legitimate shipping company that seeks Independence and Liberty from the East India Company's monopoly over trade in the region! Politics! Letters sent over the course of the Opium War! It's exciting and I promise I'll make it even more unbelievably insane, even though it's hard to compete with a reality that involves Captains of ships almost starting international accidents, Owners of Companies who have glibber tongues and stunning eloquence and skulls that CAN WITHSTAND BEING BELTED IN BY CLUBS, late British colonialism that is oddly both reluctant and ridiculously effective at the same time, and two good friends who come from completely separate backgrounds taking over a new economic world. HAVE I PIMPED HARD ENOUGH? And in between there is everything about Hong Kong that I have ever wanted to research and spend time appreciating and combing through that I now will! /o/ \o\

J & M

Fandom: Historical fiction: 1800s Hong Kong, Jardine-Matheson &c.
Rating: PG
Characters: Jardine, Matheson, cameos by a bunch of other historical figures

Correspondence between the Estimable Mssrs. James Matheson and William Jardine, now and later of the Jardine Matheson Corporation in Hong Kong, detailing in personal colours the trials and tribulations that accompany the establishment of such a Shipping Company in such a time when Her Majesty's interests are both Colonial and Economic and Diplomatic.

Mssr. Matheson, having been blessed with good birthing and more than respectable living circumstances, must be excused for his eloquence. Mssr. Jardine, having been blessed by hard living and leanness, but be excused for his frightening ability.

1066 words and a lot of banter!

Dear James, am in England, please do not do anything too rash that may make us too rich in the next few months -- )

Drabble Battle #2! Unfortunately, the Discworld prompt somehow managed to fling itself off the Elephants and go thundering elsewhere, so for the moment the battle rages between Space and Space. 8D [personal profile] voksen is to blame for the Gundam Wing, and everyone else is to blame for Trek.

Again, word count is not an indication of bias (FOR SERIOUS THIS TIME), and nothing is really read through or fully thought out. Experimenting with a few new styles, too!

Gundam Wing: Treize lives! But Zechs takes huge political falls. (And I somehow manage to write only the introduction, where Treize doesn't appear at all, huzzah!) 1031 words. )

Trek: Flying-o-phobic McCoy, meet Starfleet! 437 words. )

karanguni: (RENO turns)
Adapted from the poll earlier this week because K:
  1. Doesn't have the brains to write a full fic yet
  2. But wants to write bits and pieces
  3. And is totally unashamed of subjecting 2 totally unrelated fandoms to a knockout poll to see which one gets written first

8D THE WORD COUNT IS NOT AN INDICATION OF MY BIAS. Not at all. Note: everything is written as-is: no grammar/logic/fun checks for me at 234am!

I just wanted to say ♥ and that I love you guys for being the caring, insanely talented and heartfelt people that you are. ♥ It's always blown my mind away how a shy girl who talks too much from this corner of the globe has been able to get to know all you crazy and fantastic people from all over the place - you guys have been a bright damned light, full of lessons of life, politics, writing, love, joy. I'm honoured and lucky to call you guys my friends. ♥ ♥ And will always look forward to getting to know you guys better, regardless of how much we talk right now.

Also, a huge thank you to anyone who's dropped a word for me over the last few days of epic crap-time, and hearts out to everyone who's been going through hard times or Workfail or tiredness. As Ocean's 12 the movie said, HANG TIGHT.

Since I haven't done up my DW ones -- Pick whichever you'd like to be on!

1. Beta-filter babies -- my general beta-filter, which is really more of a 'here let me post stuff at you'. Contrary to the name, you don't actually have to beta anything; I occasionally call out in pain/for opinions, but it's totally cool if you just want to read and stuff. Warnings that my brain when on beta mode usually operates like a bizarre machine that hasn't been oiled in a few decades. 8D

2. Bat-pauper AU -- since I loveth this AU to death, I filtereth random things that I jot down for it here.

:D I recently posted some FFVII stuff to the beta-filter section, so if anyone's interested, there you go. \o\

Psst, if you're on those filters on my LJ, I think I/should have added you to the DW filters. If you can't see the latest beta-filter post beneath this one when you think you should, poke me with a stick!

AND TO ANY OF MY FRIENDS WHO ARE UNDER THE WEATHER, OR WHO ARE HELPING ME THROUGH MY TIME OF WEIRD HORMONES, OR WHO WILL EVER BE UNDER THE WEATHER: ♥ You are all and each of you beautiful people, articulate in your own ways, and a gift to this small green planet of ours. ♥

Where I realise what a ridiculously lucky person I am to have the flisters that I do.

As I sat up yesterday in the ridiculous bowels of the night writing the next bit of [livejournal.com profile] nasdack, I read through what [livejournal.com profile] ellnyx had written before me and felt truly, truly overwhelmed because Nyx writes so damned good that all I want today is to try to be even half as impact-worthy in my parts. Or to be half as good a friend, especially when it's 1 am on a work night and K is a bad/sad invisible machine. ♥

And that's on top of the wonderful and amazing [livejournal.com profile] pere_chan, whom I spoke to over Skype for the first time yesterday. It's one of the best feelings in the world when you pick up the phone (uh, mic), call someone, and feel 0 awkwardness. And then proceed to spend 3 hours talking about either tentacles, race, and how to make Dick not look like a ho. ♥

If the universe had more space/time/spacetime, I'd zoom over and save [livejournal.com profile] dnatio_memoriae from drowning in schoolwork, because D, too, is full of :D and does not deserve to be going "AUGH!" Thank you, man, for commenting all the time and taking time out to ask if I'm okay even as the jaws of your proposal yawn wide to swallow you whole.

To [livejournal.com profile] shadowwaker, who has been the unfortunate victim of my brainless sickness + 2am brain, thank you for coming out and chatting with me! :D I am notoriously bad at being chatty, but you remind me how much fun it is to step outside of my Circle of Shy (TM). It blows my mind how many languages you speak and how cool it is to just giggle and fangirl over a German Rufus whospeaksreallyfastandamazingly. ♥ And fic! And squishy.

[livejournal.com profile] white_jenna talked to and with me way before so many people, and was one of the first to break me into the habit, for which I am eternally grateful. ♥ Hehe, also, you are the bestest person to linkspam squeeish things with, as you amazingly always manage to spread it out to everyone else! :D

[livejournal.com profile] regicidaldwarf, I DO LOVE OUR CHAT, and our mumbly ramblings about our daily lives and Who and university and just life. It's something that reminds me how ?!?! lucky I am to be able to flail around with someone so far away. \o ♥

[livejournal.com profile] charlie_d_blue, my pimp, my most lovely pimp: without you, I wouldn't have known the joys of flailing in an outright CAPSLOCK flail way. You are exactly my age and it is fucking fantastic because you are awesome, five times more mature than me, have the brains of a GENIUS, and make me want to smile and smile and smile and then write porn. Or watch Leverage. I OWE YOU A CARD.

[livejournal.com profile] two_if_by_sea - I know I never quite comment on your posts 0.00005 as much as I should, but let me say that your posts always make me grin and go oooooh over your photographs and the everyday things. :D Your comments and pimping are so \o \o \o that I don't even have words, I must make do with one-armed pictorial flailing. \o \o \o

[livejournal.com profile] evercourant, baby, you are so insane that I want to keep you on my shelf and hug you all the time and and and :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD Your mad laughter through fic and my Psychotic Dream Sequences warms my cold, dream-wearied heart.

[livejournal.com profile] knightlineninja, I don't know if you're going to read this, BUT I LOVE THE KNIGHT, and hope that work has not swallowed you. TEA! It will be forthcoming!

[livejournal.com profile] scheherezhad, I still owe you. *g* You're amazingly generous, thank you so much for doing up the Jaynehat for me - I was just so flabbergasted when you offered, and it sits on my bed, guarding one of my bedposts from the glaring light of day at all times. ♥

[livejournal.com profile] aikonamika, seeing your comments always makes me smile. :D In spite of the fics I write sometimes having 0 overlap with the things you're interested in, you're still here, which brings a huge glow to my heart. :D

[livejournal.com profile] raikomotomiya, when you commented on Batfic I nearly DIED OF GLEE, and then you you you did fanart and and and it is amazing and I love seeing the snippets and you are SO :D INDUCING, YOU KNOW THAT? :D

[livejournal.com profile] deepad, reading your posts always makes me think and be a better person. You're so much more conscious and linked to the world around you than many others, and you're always eloquent in the ways you think and phrase the way you think. ♥ Sometimes it's intimidating, because I feel like I am a lowly brainless ant in comparison, but I still love reading your posts and comments, and learning by proxy how to be more aware, and be more cool about the way different people feel, think and operate. ♥

[livejournal.com profile] glass_icarus, YOU ARE SO FULL OF WIN. Thank you so much for guiding my eggchick brain around its flaily university thoughts - without you I'd be a million times as anxious. It is so unbelievably cool to think I'll be able to meet up with you soon, and I look forward to it WITH GREAT ANTICIPATION. Thank you for reading and for commenting on my things, and for articulating the way you did on my thinky-thoughts post in ways I couldn't have ever imagined articulating myself. ♥

[livejournal.com profile] guingel, your posts on Bible readings and on your huge amazing life? Always a win. Again, I am a horrible non-commenty-non-commenter, but it's still supremely awesome to go through the flist and see bits about cons and life. ♥ ♥ Plus, having discussions with you always makes me think, for which my rotting brain is ever grateful.

[livejournal.com profile] voksen. I JUST CAPSLOCK RIGHT AT YOU. For the commentspam, the BRAINSPAM, the SCHULDIG ICON OF DOOM, and all the back-and-forth and FOOD and mmmmm and here I'm going to just roll around in glee. :D

[livejournal.com profile] autumn_belias, dude, you care so much about when I stay up and are always telling me to look after myself - ♥, Sam, seriously. I'm glad that Yuletide stuck us together in the same chat, because elsewise I'd never have an awesome person to flop around with and destroy biology notes with. 8D

[livejournal.com profile] mjules, YOU REC THE MOST AMAZING THINGS. Heeee, and and and The Left Hand of Darkness, man. That's enough to make me weep with gratefulness at meeting you in the wide stream of the interwebs.

[livejournal.com profile] numinicuous, from the first moment on #yulechat, you have been :D :D :D and so damned smart and woah multitasking, and that has never changed, SO PLEASE NEVER CHANGE. Also, I frequently want to elope with your icons. 8D

[livejournal.com profile] sharaith, you come from such a different place and experience than me, and that humbles me so, so much. ♥ I love reading your posts, and am so :D that you find time out to comment on the things I post about. ♥!

*PANTS* Okay, I never quite intended to write such a long list, but NOW THAT I HAVE, I am deathly afraid that I have missed someone out - if I have, HIT ME, because my brain is still operating on a lot of ?????? and and and *flop* I have probably used the word "awesome" and "amazing" too many times today.

But in short - ♥ I look at the people I've met here on this LJ, how different and similar we all are, and it's a moment of gladness: I have lived to see this!
karanguni: (HUGHES junshou)
K cleans out her closet and tries to do some good in the world. \o

1. a close friend of mine, [livejournal.com profile] viewpoints, is a freelance photographer just starting out; her current homepage is here if you want to check it out!
2. the world being full of suck, family + money troubles = epic fail. con season isn't quite in kick yet, and so she's in a bit of a pinch as she tries to start up on her feet
3. in an effort to try and help out, I'm selling off a few thing sitting around my room. :D
4. if you're interested (prices are in USD), please drop a comment and I'll let you know her paypal email - everything goes straight to her.
5. prices are what-you-see-is-what-you-get: I'll cover shipping to anywhere in the world, unless you want to cover it for me. :D
trudi canavan: the novice (softcover) = $5

j.k rowling: harry potter and the order of the phoenix (Bloomsbury softcover) = $8

*gets down to her giftfics and layouts in the meantime, eeee*

A lot of stuff's been going down in LJ land of late - Dreamwidth and Racefail and many other deep, deep things that I can't hope to ever understand or involve myself in. So instead I write a long thing here, which is just my two cents, but maybe you'll all find it an interesting one.

Also, calling out: a friend of mine is in a bit of pinch financially as she's trying to start out freelancing and doesn't have a steady inflow, so I'm wanting/trying to help her out in any way possible. 1. Would anyone be interested in buying DVDs, books and the like? I'll cover shipping costs! 2. I'm also willing to design pages, icons, posters, write &c. for whatever you think my brains are worth. If people are interested, I'll set up a proper post with details!

Swear I'll stop updating now. Today's been crazy with updates.

The Sweet Charity Auction ends in a few hours, GO BID FOR I AM CHEAP? :D :D? FOR HONOUR, GLORY, DOING GOODNESS AND A HARD BOILED EGG.

Also, anyone else on the flist play Samurai Warriors? Or Dynasty Warriors? And I know I'm going to get shot for this, but anyone who fails to enjoy Digital Devil Saga?

And Happy April Fools'! Leave a drabble prompts in the comments if you'd like - a fandom, characters, and a gag.
karanguni: (HONOUR and glory)
I know I just did one for Bat!pauper fic, but I realise that there are, woah, a lot more people here (hi!!!!) than there were when I first did a call of being on a general beta-filter. I just posted some Final Fantasy VII stuff for the Restorations Arc under beta, so if you want on that list to read it, please do comment below! :D Please be not shy - it's not a beta filter where you actually have to say anything, it's just that I occasionally post something with questions like "SHOULD I BURN THIS OVER AN OPEN FIRE?" Lurkers are totally welcome. *waves*

The beta-filter gets stuff from more or less everything that I'm doing - unprocessed and unedited and generally MESSY LIKE A CAKE AT A 3 YEAR-OLD'S PARTY - but if you DARE GO FORTH... 8D

Similarly, if you want to be taken off the beta-filter, just tell me. No hard feelings! ♥

Pssst, as a pimpin' sidenote: I'm up for fic & graphics bidding at the Sweet Charity Auction! Just search for me under "karanguni"! Lots of other cool people are on auction as well: here I do pimp [livejournal.com profile] deejay's chai basket, [livejournal.com profile] lferion and [livejournal.com profile] scheherezhad's jewellery, [livejournal.com profile] everysecondtues's fic and [livejournal.com profile] attempt_unique's graphics. :D :D Have I missed anyone?
karanguni: (CLAIRE is amazed)
Lots of things are churning in the ficbin, but nothing's ready to be shown to the big bad world yet. \o A couple of teasers/random thoughts:

Final Fantasy VII: Restorations III

Every time I embark upon a multiparter, my first thought is you are such a lazy bastard and then the next is oh my god what have you got yourself into now? It's kind of freaky that Restorations, in spite of being slow and short and snail-like, has evolved into a new category of STOP OH GOD WHAT ARE YOU DOING. Next up: reverse-colonialisation, Reeve being a better politician than the whole world combined, Rufus getting his ass summarily handed to him by the irony gods, Tseng v. Past v. Present, and Wutai Existing For Us To Make Stuff Up About It.

Batfic: pauper!AU

  1. Dick and Bruce argue for great profit
  2. Why does this sound like every other Batfic in the universe?
  3. Oh, and Harvey Dent.

Gundam Wing

Zechs/Treize, because I NEED TO WRITE THIS SO BAD. I've this bad feeling that I'm going to need 8 hours in front of my episodes with a notepad and a few flowcharts before I get to writing it with any measure of confidence, though. But the nature of prediction! The ETERNITY OF FRIENDSHIP. Treize's blatant inability to keep his hands to himself! Zechs versus magnanimity versus monogamy! \o/!!

Antique Bakery

I am so stalled on this one, but Tachibana needs to go get (way)laid, courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] voksen and the good nation of Korea.

This needs a pimp post all on its own. Suffice to say: vampires (in a good way), no clear seme/uke relationship, no clear BL, NANAO CHRONO, mindfuckery on a level that I only wish I could emulate, and lots and lots and lots and lots of fun.

Here, go read scans, or head to [livejournal.com profile] ivory_and_horn's IJ pimp post.

Series I've finished ploughing my way through sans mercy or humility watching:

x Peacemaker Kurogane (uh, what)
x Kuroshitsuji (I like Sebastian's clothes better than I like the plot)

Any recs, guys? :D? Anything? Good historical stuff would totally rock my boat.

Also, I am pimping out this course that [livejournal.com profile] shadowwaker is doing. Please do head to this post if you want to sign up! I'll leave the objectives under a cut, but there are loads more details on that post than there are here, so please do go check it out. ♥

Anyone up for Creative Writing-ness? )
karanguni: (dick is HIGH)
I solemnly swear to write Batman fic.

I solemnly swear to write Bruce AU sort of fic in which he turns into a pauper or something.

I solemnly swear to make Terry suffer. Again. More. A lot.

I solemnly swear to write Tseng/Veld.

I solemnly, solemnly swear to write Tseng/random guy just mindlessly screwing each others' brains out for [livejournal.com profile] nasdack.

I solemnly swear to write Genesis and Veld fucking shit up. Over something.

I solemnly swear to write Rufus getting bitched out by Reeve and then re-bitching him back. If that's grammatically possible.

I solemnly swear to write a bizarre short AU piece in which everyone is an angel and Lucifer's really angry all the time, like that isn't already status quo.

I solemnly swear that I am solemnly apologising for solemnly and swearishly spamming your flists.

I solemnly swear to find ways to cook good food from ether while I do this tomorrow on my break, because on Friday oh god on Friday ahahah Friday.

I solemnly swear that what I need is a "SCREAMING WITH MY HEAD LOPPED OFF" icon.

Beyond your sad confinement
In a predicted bonehouse,
Witch thrown riddle of flesh
And water.

O soar until nothing
remains but great glittering holes
In the black godspun shirt over your head.
