Today's [community profile] snowflake_challenge: In your own space, tell us about 3 creative/fannish resources, spaces, or communities you use or enjoy. Oh no. UHHH.

  • I hang out on Exchanges After Dark on Discord to keep in the vibe of exchanges (I'll have to dig around to see if an invite link is public; maybe others know better than I do!)
  • .....

Being sick sucks! That is all. [community profile] snowflake_challenge today: In your own space, add something to your fandom’s canon. I'm going to do a fannish fifty speedthrough of everything I can think of that might add delight or chaos.

  • The Bedlam Stacks: Merrick finds a botanical elixir that makes him fall asleep and not age for long periods of time. Sleeping Beauty!
  • Hikaru no Go: Touya Kouyou gets to meet Sai, who has been reincarnated with amnesia
  • The Culture: Falling Outside the Normal Moral Constraints fights Zakalwe. Zakalwe is a ship.
  • Final Fantasy VII: Tseng is actually from Wutai. Bonus points if he's a double-agent who becomes Turned By Shinra.
  • Discworld: Moist becomes King, and Carrot becomes Commander of the Watch. God, I'm not even sure if I want that.
  • Vorkosigan Saga: on-screen Jole/Aral. Yes, this is just canon. Yes.
  • Naruto: Kakashi goes blind. Permanently.
  • Batman: Dick Grayson is actually happy. Gasp! Sorry, this is too unrealistic. I'll bait and switch: Dick Grayson comes to train Terry in Batman Beyond.
  • Prince of Tennis: Atobe is disinherited.
  • The Administration: Kier gets insanely, madly rich, and Toreth is still with him.

Today's [community profile] snowflake_challenge wants us to Scream Into the Void. Get it all out.

I scream into the void a lot as-is. Here are some vaguely fannish Screams:

[community profile] snowflake_challenge seems delayed for day 3, so I shall ad lib for Fannish 50 and talk about coding for fandom.

I tried and failed to engage with fandom coding early on, when AO3 was getting spun up (got recruited at my university to join AO3 coders! Then gave up very rapidly as I was both very busy and not yet very hip with coding) and when the LJ-DW shift was occurring (will I ever understand S2 themes? No, because it takes too much CPU!). But 2017 (!!) rolled around and I coded the first-ever Yuletide tagset app because I could not stand for the life of me looking at a large AO3 tagset in the UI. The rest is history!

Some of that history: )

Along the way, I've tried out new exchanges and managed to learn to write again. I now even manage some fannish joy every now and then! I have so much love for the people who reached out and helped me back into fandom via this stuff: Morbane and Fence and Firebird and everyone else. Then there are the crazily generous donors who show up every year to toss a coin to their Witcher coder to keep the app (and my spirits) up. Then on top of that are the amazing writers and recipients I've met in the course of trying exchanges other than Yuletide. It's been an super fun ride, and one I hope I get to keep riding for the foreseeable future. ♥

Today's [community profile] snowflake_challenge prompt is In your own space, write a promo, manifesto or primer for your fave character, ship or fandom, which I shall shamelessly steal for purposes of Fannish 50 as well.

Whenever someone says manifesto, my first and only thought is the Prince of Tennis fandom manifesto for Tezuka/Fuji, from the glory days of LJ. It hasn't necessarily aged well, but then again, how are you supposed to age 13-year-old tennis-obsessed boys who can summon dinosaurs and defy the laws of physics?

So I guess I'll speed date what few character/ship/fandoms float to the top of my mind:

Character - Final Fantasy VII - Tseng )

Ship - Prince of Tennis: Tezuka/Fuji )

Fandom - The Culture )

IV. Death by Water

Phlebas the Phoenician, a fortnight dead,
Forgot the cry of gulls, and the deep sea swell
And the profit and loss.
                               A current under sea
Picked his bones in whispers. As he rose and fell
He passed the stages of his age and youth
Entering the whirlpool.
                               Gentile or Jew
O you who turn the wheel and look to windward,
Consider Phlebas, who was once handsome and tall as you.

-- The Waste Land, T.S. Eliot

I'm giving fannish 50 a try! Today's topic is Yuletide, since it's fresh on my mind.

New this year for Yuletide:

  • Learned how to code a Discord bot - recommend!
  • Finished my assignment before December (!) - recommend!
  • Wrote all my treats in the last week before reveals - do not recommend!

Wrote/Received this Yuletide:

  • I showed up as The Usual Suspect in Tang Dynasty RPF (Li He, whooo), The Culture (Led and FOTNMC are my current jam, it seems!), and The Bedlam Stacks (Merrick & Mori, I stan)
  • New fandoms were Batman: Wayne Family Adventures and my first proper Cthulhu Mythos (Dream Cycle) fic. The Silver Key is actually so good as a piece of writing about losing your imagination.
  • Received an excellent Heike fic from [personal profile] yhlee and a very cool Star Trek/Left Hand of Darkness crossover from keerawa

Cutting Room Floor this Yuletide:

  • Sniped the Kamusari Series from my requests; delightful worldbuild, but I couldn't find the will to figure out what to prompt for it. But! Magical-ish forests! Funny main character! So soothing to read. Gimme more, Miura Shion!
  • No new canons this Yuletide D: I normally at least pick up an East Asian history adjacent thing, but IRL was v. overwhelming. [personal profile] lnhammer's astoundingly good poetry prompts did get written and with great justice, though, so the wheel turns sometimes!

A universe of unmapped grief and love
And new master light is beyond
The pleiades and plow and southern stars.

O soaring
Icarus of outworld, burn bright
The traceries of known skymarks,
Slide the highway planets behind
Your clear waxed wings.

Go conquer the everywhere left
Beyond your sad confinement
In a predicted bonehouse,
Witch thrown riddle of flesh
And water.

O soar until nothing
remains but great glittering holes
In the black godspun shirt over your head.
