Day 10: In your own space, post a rec for fannish and/or creative resources and spaces. Tell us where you go to dig up canon facts for your fandom, or where you get all the juicy details about your favorite ship. Where do you like to hang out and squee like a squeeing thing?

Resources:

I'm a writer, and by and large my biggest resource is... other fic in that canon. I rarely do research outside of canon except in technical spaces, and that's all Google. That said...

Hikaru no Go: I read the Ki-in's Japanese website, and (am very belatedly) collating some of the more interesting (admittedly Iyama Yuuta related) stuff on this Tumblr tag.

Vorkosigan Saga: the wiki, with caveats that I only trust it as far as I have time to throw on the books.

Speaking of Tumblr – it is satan's asshole for many things, but it is extremely useful for gathering random facts/pieces of inspiration. I tag that stuff as useful.

I adore writing for prompts or challenges, and while I haven't written for a comm in a long, long while, I always try to do Yuletide. I also check out [community profile] kink_bingo and related comms for inspiration when I need it. TV Tropes is a natural secondary source. *g*

Back when I was really active on DW/LJ? I had some great people in my circles who would write amazing fandom manifestos. [livejournal.com profile] darkeyedwolf is one that springs to mind at once.

Ships:

I love echoing fanon, so this is entirely a recs list for some of my favourite fandom writers:

[archiveofourown.org profile] elvaron: FFVII, Vorkosigan Saga

[archiveofourown.org profile] roachpatrol: Homestuck

[archiveofourown.org profile] thehoyden: Hikaru no Go, hockey RPF

[archiveofourown.org profile] lightgetsin: FMA, every single damn thing they write

[livejournal.com profile] ship_manifesto is another great place. Like for this Tezuka/Fuji piece of great hilarity.

Hangouts:

I haven't for ages, so if anyone has chatty DW comms? Please tell me! Yulechat is really all that I hang out on, and only at EOY. The entirety of The Culture fandom seems to live there, so.
karanguni: (TSENG smiles)

I AM WATCHING ADVENT CHILDREN UNSUBBED

Mindless squee )

[edit2]

I conclude that, using Rude and Reno as examples, in the Physical World of Final Fantasy VII, Turks bounce. Even on concrete. Especially on concrete.

The ironic thing is that my favourite line - amongst all the added ones, even those spoken by Rufus and Kadaj and Tifa - in this has to be one from Cloud: Sephiroth is dead.

OBLIGATORY SCREEN CAPS )

Watching ACC is clearly the route to understanding Rufus once more. You liar. You liar. Your fingers twitch when you lie, your fingers lie for you; they animated you using them so beautifully that it doesn't matter where you move them; people are transfixed. Who needs to know what's under vain Rufus Shinra's hood? NOT ME. I AM TOO BUSY LOOKING AT YOUR HANDS, YOU LYING MANIPULATIVE BASTARD I am so incoherently in love with you again.
karanguni: (HONOUR and glory)
I am not going to press the backspace button for the next fifteen minutes except to make grammatical and spelling corrections. I MAKE NO CHANGES TO MY INSANITY: these bits are all meant to Reggib Worg (I'M SORRY MR. DAHL).

[edit] Plenty of happy mind bickering in the second one. :D Even if you don't know Samurai Warriors, well -- Toyotomi Hideyoshi (united the land) and hired Ishida Mitsunari (to be his sharp-tongued logistics guy and eventual Big Time retainer; in the game he is v. pretty and v. kickass and beats people up with a fan, I mean, come on), who in turn hired Shima Sakon (who talks back to Mitsunari where all others cower in fear/adoration/envy and gets bought over by much money HONOUR in exchange for his 1337 strategy skillz0rs).

I'm so sorry, Japan.

Final Fantasy VII: Reeve and Lazard for _ice_lady (433 words) )

Samurai Warriors 2: Ishida Mitsunari and Shima Sakon (406 words) )

Also in progress:

  • Batfic: Pauper!AU Dick and Jason on spring break fic for [livejournal.com profile] scheherezhad
  • FFVII: still more massive Restorations, ajsfkljalsfjlk, the million dollar question being, Will Reeve Ever Stop Talking?
karanguni: (RUFUS' clothes)
I DO NOT KNOW WHY THE UNIVERSE LIKES ME SO MUCH RIGHT NOW, BECAUSE TODAY HAS BEEN INCREDIBLE.

TSENG. DRAWN. PAINTED. WITH RUFUS. BY [livejournal.com profile] dnatio_memoriae. IF YOU DO NOT LOSE AT LEAST A FEW BRAINCELLS LOOKING AT THE SHEER HOTNESS OF HIS SUIT AND RUFUS IN A TIE, YOU ARE OBVIOUSLY BLIND AND MUST LOOK CLOSER FROM THE BOTTOM OF YOUR SOUL.

Plus, it comes over and on top of other awesome things this week:

  1. Getting a POSTCARD from Columbia. What the fuck, university, you're months away and already you are beautiful.
  2. Getting a letter from Columbia, which - as copy/pasted as I'm sure it is - is still so damned shiny, because, my god, it's like, this adult woman telling me she loves me and that she spoke for me during the admissions panel, and then she signs off in real pen, even managing to almost misspell "New York". I am in so much love it's crazy.
  3. It turns out that the best friend is, actually, alive! Tired sounding, but alive! My heart is more at peace than it has been in a while upon hearing that.
  4. Getting friended by [livejournal.com profile] yuletide people is like getting people-shaped presents in my inbox.
  5. Writing an insane number of fics for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide apparently generates an insane amount of feedback; this is something I can live with.
  6. Hopefully we will be upgrading to better internets soon! Faster surfing. I like muchly.

[edit] Omg. It is five minutes later and I am still looking at the pretty. The shoes. THE SHOES. And Tseng's VEST. And my god the creases, they look so real, I want to touch them. And then make them... creas-ier.

I seriously have been so fucking gifted with amazing friends and crazymadawesome fellow fandom people. Yuletide's an important season for this journal, since (looking back) I realise that my first venture into fic and fandom et al s'dated almost exactly a year ago from now. *g* I'd never have imagined that I'd meet so many insanely talented and beautiful human beings. Thank you, flist, for being who and what you all are. I LOVE YOU, and am so lucky to be blessed to know you.
karanguni: (CLAIRE is amazed)
Busy as a house on fire, lately, but there's always time for distractions, and I figure smaller ones are better than bigger ones. Ergo:

One-sentence drabble meme!

You give me a fandom, and then a character, or a word-prompt, or a small unicorn, or a scenario -- I'll give you a sentence. You are free to a) give me as many prompts as you like b) cross things over like stitches c) ask me for fandoms I don't usually write. No promises on how many sentences I'll get back to you if you ask me for a million, though. :D

And some recs:

Stained Glass Sky, by [livejournal.com profile] icor. Final Fantasy VII, Cissnei/Aerith - such beautiful worldbuilding, and easy-to-read characterisation. Some of the best and only femmeslash you'll get in the fandom these days.

Tiny Halloween Crisis Core cast fanart, by [livejournal.com profile] mogumogu. I weep at the Kunsel. Weep.

[edit]

And some meta:

People who've read my stuff tell me that I worldbuild a lot, which is kinda funny, because it's not something I realise that I do. How can I? I live in a tiny island. I'm young. I haven't seen enough of the world. Sometimes I wonder, how dare I, but I never really thought about it.

Neil Gaiman did, when he wrote American Gods. The book's practically cult reading in fandom, and if you're read it, or will ever read it, that tiny little introspective by Neil will both humble you and make you want to see more than what the viewport of your life has let you see.

And then dare to be daring.
karanguni: (TSENG smiles)
The dirty deed is done, my friends. The stockmarket AU is done - rewritten in some parts, and with... a lot of words added on. It's worth your while to read it from beginning up even if you followed the original! :D :D Very worth it.

Fandom: Final Fantasy VII/Final Fantasy XII/The Stockmarket
Characters: Balthier/Tseng, Rufus/Tseng
Rating: Hard R overall
Summary: Tseng's in New York, Balthier's in London, and Rufus is in the sky as the world burns around them. Hedging on futures can be such tricky things.
Functional explanation: The stock markets exploded. Balthier, Rufus and Tseng are hot. More excuses here.

Part 1: Is that a trust fund in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?

Part 2: Some Things You Can't Buy, For Everything Else There's The Theoretical Joint Bunansa-Shinra Empire

Part 3: Or, How Tseng Teaches Us To Stop Worrying And Love The Platinum Credit Card

2558 words on the first, 6907 words on the second, 8988 words on the third and more of... everything all around! \o\

Do follow [livejournal.com profile] nasdack for immediate futures (okay, stopping with the financial puns now) and great profits. :D THE AU DOES NOT END HERE.
karanguni: (RUFUS looks)

The joint Shinra-Bunansa empire.

Entirely the fault of [livejournal.com profile] karanguni and [livejournal.com profile] logistika_nyx

It is the beginning of the end. From the original Balthier/Tseng and Tseng/Rufus madness comes an entire au!universe.

Posting begins very, very, very soon. 8D Watch the community for updates, or join the community for, um. Privileged access to things that aren't there yet? 8D 8D 8D 8D 8D

IT'S GROWING INTO SOME BIZARRE KIND OF MONSTER. I warn you. I wrote this under the influence of a green tea latte and Britney Spears. Your sanity is not insured, no more than your financial instruments are.

Hi

Jun. 16th, 2008 06:04 pm
karanguni: (ROY looks)
Because:

a) failing at life is my major past time
b) I feel kinda sad (real life, why art thou real?)
c) my life is a dark abyss etc due to strange reasons involving the sudden and abrupt loss of important academic documents

Therefore:

I post short, kinda substandard drabblefic lugged in over from IJ. Sorry, guys. Bad week. Too stressed to write anything real. My sendspace account also chose this brilliant moment to bite the dust, leaving me sad and DDDDDDDDDD: Hooray, Murphy! \o/

HI FLIST. Because today is the day that I spam with everything but the [livejournal.com profile] springkink things that I'm supposed to be writing, I give you this post full of meta-Final Fantasy VII drivel! 8D 8D

First up is The Morning News' guide to men's fashion. I personally consider their articles on suits and dress shirts the bible verse on how a Turk would buy his clothes. In fact, in my mind, these articles were written by a very, very snide Turk with a very, very good idea on exactly how sharp he's meant look for the job. Read them. They're hilarious. They're informative, too. But mostly hilarious.

Next comes my attempt at writing porn. I fail at porn, but I fail worse at resisting the siren call of new challenge communities, so here, have a porn_battle Tseng/Rufus drabble.

Then [livejournal.com profile] logistika_nyx and I were discussing the process of plotting and outlining fic, because obviously that is what sane people do in their free time, and out of it came the idea to do a behind-the-scenes kinda thing. And so this run-through of Empery for the Extremely Bored was born. 8D

You can click the cut to read it, or (for greater fun and benefit) you could check it out at [livejournal.com profile] logistika_nyx's pimpin' new community, [livejournal.com profile] bunny_bit_me. You've got to be a member, but it's a wonderful concrit place where you can read the twisted inner workings meta of a handful of really good and cool authors.

Oh god, writing behind-the-scenes stuff is so pretentious and and and big headed and I apologise totally if it sounds presumptuous to you guys. D: D: D: I are a tiny, scared author in a big world filled with authors and readers who are better than me.

Empery: a director's commentary (or, this is how the rabid squirrel really swings!) )

Still workin' on those prompts, too. FORGIVE ME, FOR I WRITE SLOW LIKE A WOMBAT*.

* uh, even though I have no idea how fast wombats actually go
karanguni: (RUFUS' clothes)
But I think that after last week I have absolutely no ability to rest for more than three hours without shooting awake and staring at my phone. I'm dead tired, my eyes are heavy, and I'm still typing.

So, flist, what do you think of a Tseng/Rufus/Reno written along the lines of Franz's Do You Want To?

Well he's a friend and he's so proud of ya
He's a friend and I knew him before you, oh yeah
Well he's a friend and he's so proud of ya
Your famous friend, well - I blew him before you, oh yeah.

Oh well I woke up tonight and said I
I'm gonna make somebody love me
I'm gonna make somebody love me
And now I know, now I know, now I know
I know that it's you
You're lucky, lucky
You're so lucky!

Oh well do you, do you do you want to?
Oh well do you, do you do you want to, want to go
Where I've never let you before?

Y/N?
karanguni: (HUGHES junshou)
Well, maybe not so massive...

There are a couple of fandoms out there that have had a profound impact on me and my lifestyle (eg, how often I sleep; when I sleep; why my fingers are bent at a funny angle from hitting and holding the shift key too often; how I look at people; how I look at myself; which way the world turns); and very often when writing for them or leafing through the material again I am hit by the urge to supplement them with music.

Under the cut are a couple of the fandoms (obscure or not) which have augmented my worldview and triggered massive music trawling over the last few years. :D Sometimes I talk about the fandom, other times I just talk about the music; sometimes I'm lucky enough to be able to blabber on about both.

*points down* And, music aside, if anyone wants a copy of The Left Hand of Darkness, clicky the cut.

The Left Hand of Darkness, Final Fantasy VII, Baccano!, American Gods )
karanguni: (HUGHES junshou)
Not dead yet! Playing Crisis Core. Will come out of hole once Tseng stops making me drool over my keyboard. Exciting! Even more exciting: short drabble of mine got translated; such things have never happened before, v. cool. Brain melting. Squeenix hasn't spat me out yet. Nghhh.

Things to write:

* Crisis Core fic: Tseng, Zack genfic; two of them cooped up too damned long in helicopters with no one else around and Tseng is about as much of a conversationalist as Zack is a deep thinker: "Stop looking at me like that." "I wasn't aware I was looking at you in any particular way." "... You're getting on my nerves." "... You shouldn't go after her. Aerith, that is, not any of the other five or six women you flirt with." "?!$@)$(&"

* Crisis Core fic: Tseng, suits and beaches; Zack, a cool drink and fighting with umbrellas. Sand gets into guns; but Turks can't be perfect all of the time.

* Ghost in the Shell fic: Togusa on Batou in a genfic sort of way: "You're not the marrying type, are you?" Batou keeps getting angstier and angrier, and what can he do, really...

* Discworld fic/series: A day in the life of Rufus Drumknott, or how he let go and learnt to love the bomb.

karanguni: (ED high)
I had to justify buying domain space somehow! A batch of icons, to prove to myself I'm not entirely a freeloader only a freeloader 99.9% of the time. 8D

2 Cowboy Bebop
2 Final Fantasy XII (Larsa, Balthier)
4 Final Fantasy VII (Reno, Rufus |2|, Yuffie)

The rest! )

A universe of unmapped grief and love
And new master light is beyond
The pleiades and plow and southern stars.

O soaring
Icarus of outworld, burn bright
The traceries of known skymarks,
Slide the highway planets behind
Your clear waxed wings.

Go conquer the everywhere left
Beyond your sad confinement
In a predicted bonehouse,
Witch thrown riddle of flesh
And water.

O soar until nothing
remains but great glittering holes
In the black godspun shirt over your head.
