Summary:

'I get the feeling,' he said to Tseng, 'that you don't normally go around telling upstart heirs to the Shinra empire exactly how its internal affairs work.' Rufus eyes flicked around the room. 'I also have a funny sense that the cameras here are going to be looping unremarkable footage of me puttering around.'

A Good Education (2583 words) by karanguni
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Final Fantasy VII, Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Rufus Shinra/Tseng
Characters: Rufus Shinra, Tseng (Compilation of FFVII)
Additional Tags: random guest appearances
Summary:

'This is a lesson,' Rufus told him, coolly undoing button, then zip, 'about freedom to do good. Let us begin. Once upon a time, there were five or six men who planned to bring the continent some very bright futures indeed.'

karanguni: (RUFUS looks)
One morning I woke up and realised I could make Rufus terrifying. My life has not been the same since. Many thanks to [profile] pere_chan and [profile] dnatio_memoriae for flailing through betajobs, and much has changed since - though, since it's me, not necessarily for the better... With these boys I think "worse" is always a better option.

If Talking Were Effective, Yelling Would Be Academic (1/?)

Fandom: FFVII/FFXII [community profile] nasdack AU
Characters: Rufus, Balthier, Tseng; Cast of Office Gawkers: Reno, Rude, Elena
Rating: PG13
Summary: Rufus, Enfant Terrifying. Since it would be bad advice to tell any of them to talk things out, Rufus opts for alternatives.

3275 words of ?!?!

'Draw,' Rufus saysore slowly, rolling up the cuffs of his pristinely pressed white shirt with his ringed fingers, 'the shutters.'

Back to Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core! It's like I never left. 8D This one - and the ones that'll hopefully come after it - is meant to be part of some lazy set of lighter-hearted drabbles about Shinra. 8D WE'LL SEE HOW IT WORKS OUT. This one floats alone in the old sea of the odd Zack and Tseng drabble-era.

Prompts are perfectly welcome in the comments. The more hilarious the better!

A July Day (Some People Know Too Much)

Fandom: Final Fantasy VII (Crisis Core timeline)
Characters: Zack, Tseng; random guest appearance by Kunsel
Rating: PG
Warnings: Gen, and humour, alas!
Summary: Zack whiles away a July day, and figures that some people just know too much.

2185 words and an inability to keep things short!

Zack whistled under his breath. 'This is one crazy city.' )
karanguni: (RUFUS looks)
The Business of Fear

Fandom: Final Fantasy VII (OGC)/Highlander (/Baccano!)
Characters: Rufus, Methos; cameos by Tseng and Luck
Rating: Soft R
Summary: Rufus needs men who are know something of the business of fear.

Notes: Runs in the same line as New Men (Baccano!/Final Fantasy VII), but you don't need to read it to read this! Written for the no_true_pair prompt: Rufus is bound and blinded -- does Methos try to help, or take advantage of the situation?

4952 words and Rufus doing some recruiting!

Hide and seek is something Methos has come to be good at over the years, but he has absolutely no illusions about playing against the Shinra Company. )
karanguni: (RUFUS looks)
This fic officially took my brain, injected a thousand CCs of politics into it, beat it up and left me staggering about wildly. I haven't written something like this, I think, since Empery.

The last (and crowning) jewel of the Honourable Men triple bill (they're all standalones, though, so no need to read through).

I humbly request that you give this one a try. ♥ Okay going to go expire from exhaustion now.

Year One

Fandom: Final Fantasy VII (BC through CC)
Characters: Lazard-Tseng-Rufus, Veld, Reeve, does the City of Midgar count?
Rating: PG13
Warnings: Spans through Crisis Core and Before Crisis backstory. You don't need to know BC, but it helps, and there's a tiny appendix at the bottom of the fic to help you if you'd like.
Summary: From the journals of Urban Development, filling in the lives and empty spaces in Midgar.

7575 words and Midgar being alive.

One gets the impression that we shall soon be bringing them brighter futures as well. )
karanguni: (TSENG smiles)
Caveat lector: I played around a bit with this piece, because I took a look at what I'd written for Tseng thus far and asked myself if I could honestly, honestly answer the question of why he seems - for the most part, with no truly contradictory evidence - to be at the very least amoral, and at the very worst outright evil, during the course of the original game canon. I wanted to find an answer that had him unashamed, and unrelenting, and true to the badassery of evil just being evil, and not caring if evil is a true enough name or not. And then, uh, Rufus-the-megalomaniac. Way to go, no explanation there either.

WELL, I TRIED. BUT I'M NOT THAT PROFOUND, SO YOU GET THIS PIECE OF WEIRD FIC. 8D NOW I GO HIDE, USING THE EXCUSE THAT IT'S FRIDAY THE 13TH, THEREFORE I AM ALLOWED TO USE ALL SORTS OF WEIRD ELEMENTS IN THIS FIC.

In intervening years

Fandom: Final Fantasy VII
Characters: Tseng, Rufus
Rating: PG
Summary: Sector Seven burns below. Then Tseng is paid his due rights: for loyalty, and trust, and the practice of looking for some small freedom.

Every day I examine my character in three aspects:
I am disloyal in my designs for others;
I am untrustworthy in my dealings with friends;
I have failed to practice what have been passed on to me.

(taken, and warped, from another Tseng - this one a Zen master.)
Warnings: Some Before Crisis and Crisis Core knowledge would be superbly helpful, but it's not essential, and a little note is attached under the cut at the end of the fic to try and compensate.

1512 words and an extremely, extremely experimental style here: this is not your normal Tseng speaking! Also, I apologise to several Roman emperors for stealing their cool.

This is how loyalty is rewarded, as Tseng has seen out through to the latter days )
karanguni: (RUFUS' clothes)
My god, I haven't written in so long. *___*

Signal to Noise

Fandom: FFXII/FFVII (Stockmarket AU)
Characters: Tseng/Rufus
Rating: Hard R
Summary: Rufus, in Chicago.

1176 words and, uh, phonesex. Kinda. Sorta. Almost.

( Something in the air changes, as though Tseng can tell. )
karanguni: (BARACK chibi)
So, who's the crazy person who has decided to give as many people on the flist a present as she can? I AM! *BEAMS* In the spirit of the new year and attempting to kick my ass back into action. I've taken what prompts you guys have given me over the last however-many-times-I-decided-to-click-previous-entries, and have spun what I can. Happy new year! ♥ from this side of the universe.

[livejournal.com profile] dnatio_memoriae generously donated her art skillz for a couple of these, and may be contributing more in the morning! IS THE WORLD NOT A BEAUTIFUL PLACE. OH YES, IT IS. ♥

If you feel you have been deprived a present, feel free to dump a prompt of any sort on me! After all, Chinese New Year (ha! coming from me, least traditional of people!) lasts a good long while, technically! :D Right now I am going to lean back in my seat and let my eyes explode for a while. ♥
karanguni: (TSENG smiles)
tell a friend.

I am indeed home, and sweltering for more reasons than one! Work and the weather being the absolute bestest combination of things on earth. But, with the new year dawning and all sorts of interesting prospects on the horizon, I look forward to delving back into writing and stuff with a lot of ink, but mostly with my keyboard. :D

I know I owe a lot of you real-life mail -- I'll ship off the things I have on hand, but if the others take a while, it's because I'm trying to start earning a bit of my own credit; just something to do for my family in this time of ROCKS FALLING AND EVERYONE DYING. :D Not that we're in any trouble, just that my mental guilt is strong.

So, to get back into things:

DRABBLEtime:CORRESPONDENCE

Give me a character from any one of my fandoms (though I will love you if you select the ones I love in my heart *coughTSENGcoughESTRAVENcough*), and a medium of correspondence (email, longhand letter, memo, post it note, writing on wall, &c.), and a prompt. I will zoom something back to you! Multiple requests are welcome; I will write at my descretion. ♥

Postscript: pssst, and if you feel in a generous mood after the meme, you can head over to this fanficcers meme and help tell me what you think of my fic! 8D *SHAMELESS*

Restorations, Interlude II

Rating: PG
Characters: Tseng, Rufus, Veld.
Summary: By the end of the world, there were more scars on Tseng than there was skin.
Warnings: Foruth part in the Restorations Arc. Post-Advent Children, with references to Before Crisis.

Part I Interlude I Part II

2197 words, and more Tseng backstory than I really should ever shake a stick at.

Dying, to Tseng, was a job best done neatly.  )
karanguni: (TSENG smiles)
So, I'm kind of having an epic-shitty night; ergo some Restorations, even if it's far less large than it should be. \o

Restorations II

Rating: PG
Characters: Tseng, Rufus/Tseng, Reno, Elena, Rude.
Summary: And Shinra said, we are going to save the world, and then said, but let us start with restorations.
Warnings: Third part in the Restorations Arc. Post-Advent Children, with lots of... stuff.

Part I Interlude I

1614 words, and lots of the loyalty thing.

They followed him, like how lost city orphans followed any beacon, any sign. )
karanguni: (TSENG smiles)
V. tired. Exams in less than 30 hours. Going to go sleep and wake up to study like mad. May not be extremely responsive for the next fortnight. ♥ to everyone. Sleeeep.

Non-disclosure

Fandom: FFXII/FFVII (Stockmarket AU)
Characters: implied Tseng/Rufus, Balthier/Tseng
Rating: PG13
Summary: Balthier wants to know more than Tseng wants to tell. Post-original canon.

Functional explanation: I need to stop torturing the other guys with Tseng, yes I do. Shortfic!

1339 words and me copping out in exchange for staying sane. \o

( 'I'd say that anyone who tries to guard you must be insane,' Balthier replies. )
karanguni: (TSENG smiles)
Tired K is tired, but here is fic:

Entropy, And Financial Fantasy

Fandom: FFXII/FFVII (Stockmarket AU)
Characters/Pairings: Balthier/Rufus, implied Tseng/Rufus, Balthier/Tseng
Rating/Warnings: PG13
Word Count: 2529
Summary: Rufus re-negotiates his territory. Balthier rearranges it.

Functional explanation: The joint fault of [livejournal.com profile] karanguni and [livejournal.com profile] logistika_nyx.

( Entropy isn't Tseng's favoured form of therapy. )
karanguni: (TSENG smiles)
The dirty deed is done, my friends. The stockmarket AU is done - rewritten in some parts, and with... a lot of words added on. It's worth your while to read it from beginning up even if you followed the original! :D :D Very worth it.

Fandom: Final Fantasy VII/Final Fantasy XII/The Stockmarket
Characters: Balthier/Tseng, Rufus/Tseng
Rating: Hard R overall
Summary: Tseng's in New York, Balthier's in London, and Rufus is in the sky as the world burns around them. Hedging on futures can be such tricky things.
Functional explanation: The stock markets exploded. Balthier, Rufus and Tseng are hot. More excuses here.
Inflicted upon the world by: [livejournal.com profile] logistika_nyx and [livejournal.com profile] karanguni

Part 1: Is that a trust fund in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?

Part 2: Some Things You Can't Buy, For Everything Else There's The Theoretical Joint Bunansa-Shinra Empire

Part 3: Or, How Tseng Teaches Us To Stop Worrying And Love The Platinum Credit Card

2558 words on the first, 6907 words on the second, 8988 words on the third and more of... everything all around! \o\

Do follow [livejournal.com profile] nasdack for immediate futures (okay, stopping with the financial puns now) and great profits. :D THE AU DOES NOT END HERE.
karanguni: (RENO turns)
For your random fic-reading needs: some stuff on Rufus and Tseng, built for the stockmarket AU but essentially applicable to anything. Remove "New York" and replace with "Midgar", remove "Chicago" and replace with "Junon", and viola.

Collapsing into bed now.
karanguni: (BALTHIER beckons)
IT'S GROWING INTO SOME BIZARRE KIND OF MONSTER. I warn you. I wrote this under the influence of a green tea latte and Britney Spears. Your sanity is not insured, no more than your financial instruments are.

Some Things You Can't Buy, For Everything Else There's The Theoretical Joint Bunansa-Shinra Empire

Fandom: Final Fantasy VII/Final Fantasy XII/The Stockmarket

You don't really have to read them in any order. I don't even know if we have an order.

2636 words and ho'shit, five thousand backstories! \o\

Strange Untitled Stockmarket!AU

Fandom: Final Fantasy VII/Final Fantasy XII/The Stock Exchange
Rating: PG-99
Characters: Balthier/Tseng, Tseng/Rufus
Summary: Tseng's in New York, Balthier's in London, and Rufus is in the sky as the world burns around them. Hedging on futures can be such tricky things.
Functional explanation: It's all [livejournal.com profile] logistika_nyx's fault. A good chunk of this belongs to her, adapted to fit the situation and tense. You can read the original crack-ery here to see precisely which bits. Nyx: I apologise. Profusely. But probably not profusely enough.

Mostly, this is just a trader!AU: in which Tseng and Balthier make money on the gone-to-shit stock markets of our world. And Rufus waggles his eyebrows a bit. Hooray!

2425 words and oh, such a hell I am going to for this. Beware un-beta'd tense shifts!

'Are you an optimist?' Balthier would say into the receiver, when Tseng picked up. )
karanguni: (RENO turns)
Another one for the memetypes, this time around it's [livejournal.com profile] whitefirebird's request for Turks, though I'm pretty sure the choice of the Other Turk will perk [livejournal.com profile] ununoriginal's interest, too. *g*

Dark City Lights

Fandom: Final Fantasy VII (OGC)
Characters: Tseng/Reno, hinted Tseng/Rufus
Rating: R
Summary: Sometimes you just want the world to burn as much as you burn inside; sometimes you want all hell to break loose so that you don't feel too alone, or too frenetic.

1111 words and one of those pairings I'd never thought I'd write.

And he's too close to home to feel jaded. )
karanguni: (TSENG smiles)
First in the Triple Bill: three fics from three fandoms dealing with the topic-of-the-day. \o\ Today's exposition courtesy of Friedrich Nietzsche:

"One has to pay dearly for immortality; one has to die several times while one is still alive."

Not my usual fare, I'll be the first to admit, but there's distinct fun in poking pain and torture at Tseng in a way that involves so few guns. 8D

Title: To Pay Dearly
Fandom: Final Fantasy VII (post-CC, pre-AC)
Characters: Tseng, Hojo
Rating: PG
Warnings: Creepy scientist man? Spoilers for BC.
Summary: Good specimens are always the most difficult to acquire.

1062 words and mmmm, Shinra politics all over again.

Tseng kept his eyes on the electronic count of his heart rate. )

A universe of unmapped grief and love
And new master light is beyond
The pleiades and plow and southern stars.

O soaring
Icarus of outworld, burn bright
The traceries of known skymarks,
Slide the highway planets behind
Your clear waxed wings.

Go conquer the everywhere left
Beyond your sad confinement
In a predicted bonehouse,
Witch thrown riddle of flesh
And water.

O soar until nothing
remains but great glittering holes
In the black godspun shirt over your head.
